BIOTECH HEIGHTS – LUND'S NEW INNOVATION ENVIRONMENT FOR BIOPROCESS TECHNOLOGY

Biotech Heights, a hub for innovative scaling of advanced food and biomaterial production, is now launching at the Kemicentrum in Lund.

Biotech Heights will provide access to world-leading laboratories, equipment, and infrastructure, from lab to industrial scale, as well as collaborations between organisations from both industry and academia.

Currently, Biotech Heights offers 1,400 square metres of space for laboratory work and upscaling. In the future, the site will also include space for meetings and workshops. We intend to evolve into a safe place for experimentation, future investments, and start-up companies.

CLEAR COMMITMENT

“Lund University is committed to developing scalable biotechnology research, an area we see as important for building a more sustainable society. This would not be possible, however, without relevant industry partners like Tetra Pak. By bringing together experts and infrastructure, we can lead the development and drive positive change on a much larger scale,” says Annika Olsson, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Lund University.

COLLABORATION BETWEEN INDUSTRY AND ACADEMIA

Founded by Tetra Pak and Lund University, the goal of Biotech Heights is to develop the potential of bioprocess technology to meet the needs of sustainable food and material production. By pairing Tetra Pak, a market-leading expert in food processing, with Lund University, a global top 100 university, Biotech Heights strengthens the region as a centre for groundbreaking food innovation. We look forward to expanding this collaboration with many more organisations in the future.

WHY RESEARCH BIOPROCESS TECHNOLOGY?

Today, over a third of global greenhouse gas emissions are attributed to how we produce, process, and package food. The global population is rapidly increasing while arable farmland is decreasing. Innovating alternative food sources will therefore be crucial. Bioprocess technology holds potential for food production and for creating future materials. At Biotech Heights, we aim to scale up and reduce the costs of advanced bioprocess technology, and establish a foundation for new, sustainable business ventures.
