Pioneering sustainable food with biotechnology.

Why Lund?

Southern Sweden and the Öresund region provide ideal conditions for developing future foods. The area is home to four universities in Skåne, two large research facilities, a robust food industry, 40% of Sweden's primary production, and numerous food startups.

Bioprocess technology

Bioprocess technology involves using living cells, like microorganisms, or their components, such as enzymes, to produce desired products. This process is key in industries like food, pharmaceuticals, and environmental management to create sustainable and innovative solutions.

The challenge we face

Our food system generates significant waste, contributes heavily to climate change, and is marked by inequality. Biotechnology and alternative protein sources, such as fermentation, offer potential solutions. Scaling up biotech can boost global food production and reduce reliance on fossil-based raw materials.

What we do

At Biotech Heights, academia, the public sector, and industry collaborate to advance fermentation and apply bioprocess technologies to new industries. Our mission is that by 2035, everyone will eat new fermented foods every day. Based at Kemicentrum in Lund, Sweden, we have 1,400 square meters of creative spaces and high-tech labs.

We want the food system to fully exploit the potential of biotechnology by:

Connecting and developing scale-up capacity

Initiating projects, doing experiments, and developing prototypes

Increasing knowledge and awareness

Connecting people, organizations and value streams

Our team

Our team at Biotech Heights brings together expertise from both academia and industry, creating a collaborative partnership to drive bioprocessing innovations. With key players from Lund University and Tetra Pak, we bridge the gap between cutting-edge science and practical industrial applications, fostering a strong foundation for innovation and sustainable growth.
